Hailing from Berlin, producer Robot Koch is not only the mastermind behind his band Jahcoozi (Bpitch Control), he also produces and performs as a solo artist under his own name and works as a songwriter and producer for many different artists internationally. His discography is incredibly extensive, as is the extent of his imagination.

A couple months ago I was so lucky as to catch Lazer Sword live. These guys – Lando Kal and Low Limit – were so much fun, totally gettin’ down up front with each cut they dropped, working off each other’s vibe. The dance floor was shakin’, everyone around me was movin’, and these guys were throwin’ down an electro hip hop swagger that was just menacing…serious future beats.

Well these guys are as great separately as they are together. I got ahold of their split album, The Golden Handshake EP (released on Numbers in Spring 2010), and it clocked some serious play time in my life; crazy addictive. Fuzzy Ankles, one of Lando Kal’s solo tracks, is easily one of the best tracks on the album.

XLR8R calls it a “hypnotically glacial house beat…perfect for late night hijinx, when everyone on the dance floor is loaded to the gills and ready to get down with some serious beats.”

These are definitely some dirty house-y future funk beats meant to get down hardcore! And Lando Kal will be rockin’ out at Shake That Ass 2 on April 16th at Club Red. You are plain crazy if you miss this show.

Lando Kal’s bio:

It’s quite telling that when Glasgow super label re-configured their various guises and re-launched as Numbers, their debut release was from the two members of Lazer Sword, a gargantuan solo split 12” from Lando Kal and Low Limit. And that gong was The Golden Handshake EP. On that record the diverse inspirations behind the digital, dynamic duo bled through even more than their usual DMT crushing, soul searching electronic club music, proving once more that even amongst the current tsunami of genuinely original talent, both Lando Kal and Low Limit have carved a niche and sound that is unlike any other.

Lando Kal’s personal production journey started over eight years ago, producing more sample based stuff inspired by all the Bay Area, weirdo, independent record stores he worked at (including Amoeba) before bringing in more electronics. His music is a freaked out juggernaut of electronic music, primarily experimenting with various mutations of house. Dense instrumentation, analog synth and drum machine work, complex melodies, and creeping basslines are pooled from his musical obsessions with 90′s RnB, classic house, freestyle, garage, Detroit Techno, early synthesizer music, Timbaland, and… to be honest, everything in between. It’s also indebted to his experience set as an integral player in both San Francisco and New York’s underground club scenes (he was a resident at CassetteNYC with Machinedrum, Praveen and Falty DL) before moving to his current home of Berlin.

Lando Kal’s distinctly heavyweight solo releases can be found on lauded US and UK labels Sugarcane Recordings and Numbers, with upcoming highly anticipated releases on Hotflush and Beat Dimensions, alongside blazing remixes for Montreal’s Hovatron, San Francisco’s Salva and New York’s tribal super duo, Sepalcure (Machinedrum and Praveen).

So there’s this record label in San Francisco that I just sort of… stumbled upon one day. It’s been a long time since I’ve been label-loyal, but every release is fantastic; their artists are young, innovative, and just oozing with talent. The music these cats are churning out is like outerspace lazer-porn happiness and it bores into my head… affects my dreams at night… Comma is one of these artists and he’s soon to release his new EP Colortronics on this most impressive SF-based label, Frite Nite.

Comma’s debut EP called Carry The Fire was released in April 20,10 and was described by I Am A Lazer as “futuristic, cybernetic, and quite organic.” Hells yes it is, and I’ll add melodic, addictive, and completely inspiring to that list, as well. I invite you to seriously check this guy out, give his music a real listen… Roll these tracks over in your mind a little like a fine aural wine. Then get your ass down to see him at Shake That Ass 2 in Tempe, AZ on Saturday, April 16th. Believe me, resistance is futile.

Comma’s Bio:

Building on the hip hop beats that he has loved for a lifetime, Comma’s multi-dimensional sound draws inspiration from many ends of the horizon. Headnodding and melodic, Comma creates richly textured music that is influenced by cassette-era rap beats, vintage synthesizer music, childhood commercials, grime, prog rock, and science fiction.

Identifying with the freeform beat movement that has so powerfully grasped the underground electronic music community, Comma’s love of this forward-thinking style is evident in the spirit and continuous cutting edge of his production work. He infuses his music with a diverse smattering of sounds, from dance-friendly dubstep fire and warped experimental excursions to funky upbeat melodies, anthemic chords and 80’s aesthetics.

Deeply entrenched in the community that he inspires, Comma helps run the Bay area’s Frite Nite label and collective, a taste-making crew that brings together disparate elements and different people into the thriving electronic music scene. Collaborating with Boreta of The Glitch Mob in the electronic band Slidecamp and working with Eprom as half of Biclops, Comma connects the dots into productions chock full of bass and boldness.

Stepping out from the rich San Francisco bass music scene into a spotlight of his own, Comma aka Ryan Gilbert is invigorating the beat community of the Bay Area and beyond with a strong shove of electronic innovation and a solid post-genre style.

Big Up Magazine just recently (March, 2011) featured Comma in a podcast that’s both left-field fantastic and straight up rocks out, so if you’re looking for an extended play of choice cuts a la Comma then check it out.

If you’ve been to the Blunt Club over the last year or two then you’re probably familiar with this ever a-musing chick named Erika. She’s got mad skills with the paint brush, markers, and her hands. Not only is she super friendly and talented, but her deviantart profile lists her favorite cartoon character as Pepe Le Pew and her favorite video game as The Sims 2. She’s a-okay in my book!

With an imagination and collection of work that runs wild and strong, Erika Jaynes, aka Queenloopy, will be showing a full collection of work at Shake That Ass 2 on April 16th. We are mega-excited to see what Queenloopy has in store for us! Definitely ensure ample time to peruse her surreal and whimsical paintings.

Visit Queenloopy’s online gallery of work.

Erika Jaynes bio:

Born in Alaska on Nov 6th, 1981, Erika Jaynes spent her kindergarten years in California and grew up in Mesa Arizona. Erika spent a good deal of time escaping the chaotic environment of her childhood through intensely imaginative games of Barbies in giant land, mermaids in the pools, and intense adventures in the surrounding neighborhoods. Constantly drawing and living inside imaginary worlds was an important survival tool.

Starting college at an early age, Erikas real passion for the creative side of life emerged full force. Starting as a music major and eventually transferring to the fine arts department, she found a way for her hands to create and express the things living within.

The majority of her art has weird surreal themes, often involving
unnatural figures and strangely morphed animals. Whether its drawing, ceramics, sculpture, painting, whatever medium, she tends to focus on compositions in which animal/human figures are prominent. Much of the artwork has dark underlying themes, but with serene characters as the inhabitants. This duality seems to balance the light and dark aspects of the artist’s life.

We’re pretty excited about this addition to the STA2 lineup on April 16th: The Gentlemen Ether. This collaboration between two interesting minds, Lynx Kinetic layering beats with video mixing and Mr. Puma MC’s distinctive lyrics, will no doubt surprise and wow us. Check out the video below for a taste of what’s to come from this gallant duo.

The Gentlemen Ether’s bio:

What is the Ether? It has been described as the dimension from where all ideas come from. Those ideas that come from a place you can’t explain, but feel compelled to follow. We are The Gentlemen and we live in the Ether.

Two men, two power animals, Mr. Puma and Lynx Kinetic. A bond formed on the battlefields of emcee ciphers representing the legendary Tempe Bronks Krew. Now after many years apart these Gentlemen have reunited……and we have come for your hearts.

Lynx Kinetic on the beats. Inspired by the ether, the music touches on many different genres, but always with Hip Hop as the backbone. The beats leave an ample musical playground for Mr. Puma to do what he does best….perform feats of lyrical gymnastics and torch the microphone.

Schwasted’s bio:

Everyday is a good day to get Schwasted, especially for Daniel Gauss and Snapdragon. Together they form Schwasted, a US based EDM group formed in 2009. Their uplifting music and energetic style keeps crowds moving late into the night and early into the morning. Though their passion lies in live performance for fans, they host the weekly radio show PREGAME on EDMerica and publish the show as a podcast available on iTunes and their site. Listeners can grab a copy of their monthly PROMOMIX at events or as a podcast on iTunes or through their site.

SNAPDRAGON

As a lifetime listener of electronic music, Snapdragon picked up her first vinyls and developed her ongoing passion. Moved by vocal driven tracks of nu disco, electro house, and trance, Snapdragon maintains an electrified vibe throughout her sets over and over again.

DANIEL GAUSS

Trained by his hometown hero Richard Anthony, Daniel Gauss fell into his obsession of spinning electronic music. With origins in progressive and trance, Daniel has found a unique niche in the electronic music scene.
